February 19, 2015- For the third game in a row, the Kings would find themselves with a short bench. The injuries and illness bug has hit the locker room, forcing the Kings to have less than 2 lines once again. But just like Super Bowl Sunday, the skaters that put on the black and white of the Kings came and played together, with an impressive win over the Flames.
It almost took the entire first period before any of the teams would break the deadlock. Finally a goal was on the board with about two and a half minutes left to play. The Kings did a good job keeping the puck in the Flames zone when Ryan Cordes would step in the slot and go high glove side to put the Kings up 1-0.
The physicality picked up in the second period, with the Flames looking to get back into the game. The Kings picked up another goal with Marvin Lee's third goal of the season after receiving an ice pass from the right side from Tyler Esswein. Tyler's brother Jordan also picked up an assist on the play. The Flames finally would break Lennie Lopez, who up to this point was solid in net. With a few seconds above 5 minutes remaining in the middle period, Stephen Okane would poke in the Flames first goal of the night cutting the lead in half at 2-1. But the Kings would respond on the next shift when Jeff Park would break in solo on the Flames goaltender Jeff Dunham. Park made a move from right to left and had Dunahm beat for the tap in goal, showing great patience on the play. Before the period would expire, Kings forward Ryan Cordes was the recipient of a blind side hit at the blue line, knocking him down to the ice. Whether it was an accident or intentional, Cordes was part of a few altercations preceding the hit. Cordes would go after the Flames player, leading him to a game misconduct, leaving the Kings with 8 players. The Kings would have to hold on for only one more period, taking a 2 goal lead into the third.
The Kings 2 goal lead vanished in a matter of 1:20 with two goals that Lopez would like to have back. Okane's second goal of the night came on a rebound after Lopez could not get back after making the initial save. Shortly after, the Flames would tie the game a 3 when Miguel Pask snuck a shot from the circle and through Lopez's legs. We had a new game as the Flames seemed to pick up some momentum after the Cordes incident, erasing a 2 goal deficit to tie the game.
Under 4 minutes to play and still tied up, the Kings would get one goal back. A nice hold in on the blue line from Darren Chavez, he walked in and put the puck on net. Dunham made the initial save, but Mike Brewster was parked there to backhand the puck in for the go ahead goal. The backbreaker goal came a half a minute later with yet another beauty of a goal from Park. Like his first goal, Park broke in and got Dunham to go down, giving Park a gaping net to shoot at. His 5th goal of the season was enough to keep the Kings ahead for good, as they would take down the Flames 5-3 to put them back in the middle of the pack in the standings.
After dropping their first 2 games of the season, the Kings now find themselves with points in 4 of the last 5 games played. They will face a challenge next game with they face one of the top teams in the league, HG Unit. In the season opener, HG Unit pummeled the Kings 9-1. They currently are second in the division with a 5-2 record. However, this is a new Kings team since that first game. This game will be a real test for the team, to see how they sit before they enter the playoffs which is a few weeks away.
Team Notes: The Kings were hoping to get Frankie Negrette back from IR. However on his attempt to come back, Negrette had a set back when he collided with a teammate, putting him back on the IR... Ryan Cordes will face an automatic suspension for his Game Misconduct Thursday night. Let's hope that he will only be missing Sunday's game against HG Unit..
