The 6th Annual All-Star Game will be held at 3PM on Sunday March 5th at Anaheim Ice. This year two new selections will be coming from the Kings line-up-- a rookie and a vet. Both players have been impressing their teammates with consistant play and hard work.
Rookie Defenseman Justin Goodey may have only played 21 league games in his career, put is playing like one of the Kings veterens. Should one be suprized that this rookie defenseman is already making an impact? Some say not. Coming into the season, J. Goodey wasn't thinking all star, but looking to go out and play his defensive game which generates scoring chances the other way. "I knew coming on the team that I would have to play some solid D to give our offense a chance to put pucks in." And after 11 scoreless games, Justin was able to finally put a goal in on his own. This season through 16 games, J. Goodey finds himself in the middle of the Kings pack with 2 goals and 4 assists.
JUSTIN GOODEY
This year J. Goodey and Tracy Lytle have been paired up for much of the season, and have been nearly a unstoppable tandum on the blue-line. "Playing with him is great. The first time we stepped on the ice together, I had one of those vibes where I knew the chemistry would click right off the bat. We both know where the other one is going and our styles are comfortable with each other," comments Goodey on playing with Lytle.
J. Goodey credits never giving up on the play which has lead to sucess for him. There never has been an incident where you saw J. Goodey give up on the play. Even if it seems like he may be out of the play, he races back if caught to neuralize the play. Many times, he is sucessful in getting back into the play. Another credit to Justin's sucess is growing up, playing with his older brother Mike. It's also the reason why Justin plays on the blueline. "Me and my brother have always been competitive growing up. "When we were younger playing street hockey, he always wanted to score goals, so to make it competitive, I would play defense against him. Since then i've been practicing more on defense than offense." It worked as Justin has become a strong precense on the blue line. Even his brother, and last years rookie All-Star Mike agrees. "Justin definitely deserves to be in the all-star game. He has been one of if not our most consistent defenseman all season long. 'J' has been a great defensemen for as long as I can remember and he gets better each season he plays and its good to see that he's recognized for his play." Both Goodey's, back to back rookie all-stars, have been a great addition to the Kings family.
JARED ANDERSON
The other representative for the Kings going to the all-star game is Jared Anderson. Anderson will make his third apperance to the all-star game, and his first as a King. Although voted on twice in the past, Anderson's schedule will finally let him play in the event this season. "It is a real honor representing the Anaheim Ice Kings because I have been playing with them for a while and haven't had the priviledge of making the All-Star Game while playing for them. I think it is an honor anytime you can make an all star team," Anderson notes regarding his first trip as a King. "The last couple years i was voted by the Kings to go to the All star Game but both times I ended up not going because of certain things that came up. But this year will be alot of fun and i will do my best to make my team proud in the All Star Game." Anderson has been making his team proud this season, posting 11 points in 16 games.
The one unique aspect of Jared Anderson's game is his versitility. This season, captain Paul Costello has used him in nearly every position other than goalie. "The fact that he is a fluid skater makes him able to be versitle. Not many guys can transisition seemlsly. Most guys need a few games to adjust where Jared has the ability to play 3 seasons at defense, and 1 game at forward and score a goal," comments P. Costello on Andersons play. Starting off the season, the Kings used Anderson on the blueline. With linemate P. Costello, it gave the Kings 2 solid defensive lines. However Anderson's speed and puck handling ability was greatly needed up front. At two points during the season, a position move has sparked the Kings which led to mutliple games won. "I have had experience over the years playing at each position. When I played with the Jr Ducks they had me doing the the same thing moving from forward to defense alot," replys Anderson on why he thinks he has a smooth transistion. "I think from watching enough NHL hockey on t.v. I have learned over the years how each position is to be played the right way." Whether if it was the Jr. Ducks are watching the pro's, whatever Anderson has been doing to prep his game in whatever position he plays is working in his favor.
What does Anderson say about rookie Justin Goodey who will be joining him? "He is an excellent hockey player with good hockey sense and has some really good skills. He is also a very feisty player at times, which is good." When Anderson was lined up on the blueline, both he and J. Goodey could never hit the ice together. With Anderson jumping up, he has had a chance to play with the rookie, and hopefully they will be paired up together in the All-STar Game. "He is a great person on and off the ice and it will be fun to play on the same team with him. The best thing about him is that he is young too and we will have a good future with him in our lineup."
You and catch Justin Goodey and Jared Anderson this coming up Sunday, March 5th at 3PM, preseeding the Kings Sunday late afternoon game at 4:30. Post game party will follow the Kings game at Wallaby's Aussie Pub and Grill in Santa Ana. For directions, visit the website at www.aussie-pub.com
